Or perhaps ancient maps, drawn with astonishing precision, that show us how the world was imagined in ancient times. But not everything is solemn in this archive. There is also room for curious anecdotes and tense moments.
It is said that, on one occasion, a secret love letter written by a young member of the family to a lady of the court almost fell into the hands of the Dowager Duchess herself, a woman of stern character and a staunch defender of the family reputation. The letter, which contained passionate verses and promises of eternal love, was intercepted by a loyal servant, who, with great stealth, managed to return it to its recipient before the Duchess discovered it. The commotion that ensued among the servants was enormous, and for weeks the incident was whispered about, fearing the consequences that would have occurred if the letter had fallen into the wrong hands.
The archive has also had to overcome natural challenges, such as the floods that hit Madrid in 1947. The waters of the Manzanares River, swollen by a violent storm, flooded the basement of the Liria Palace, where some of the documents were housed. Archive staff worked for days to rescue the files, dry them, and restore them, thus saving an important part of the historical memory of the House of Alba. Each of these incidents has left its mark, reminding us of the fragility of our heritage and the importance of its preservation.
