About the visit to the Liria Palace.
The Liria Palace, located in the heart of Madrid, is an architectural gem and one of the most important palaces in Spain. Built in the 18th century by order of the Duke of Berwick and designed by architect Ventura Rodríguez, this majestic building has been the main residence of the House of Alba for generations.
Throughout its history, the Liria Palace has witnessed key events, from the Peninsular War to the Spanish Civil War, when it suffered severe damage from bombing. However, its reconstruction allowed it to regain its original splendor, becoming a symbol of Spanish aristocracy and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Today, the palace houses one of the most impressive private art collections in Spain, with works by great masters such as Goya, Rubens, Velázquez and Murillo, as well as a library with unique historical documents, such as letters from Christopher Columbus and manuscripts from the Catholic Monarchs.
Reserve the date for this guided tour of the Liria Palace with your partner, family, or friends. We can adapt to your schedule.
At the Liria Palace, we will see some of the most notable rooms such as:
- Stuart Room. This room pays tribute to the House of Alba’s connection to the Stuart dynasty of Scotland. Significant portraits, such as that of Queen Mary Stuart, are displayed here, highlighting the family’s lineage and historical alliances.
- Flamenco Hall. This space features masterpieces such as the portrait of Charles V and Empress Isabella, painted by Rubens after an original by Titian lost in the fire at the Royal Alcázar in 1734.
- Hall of the Grand Duke of Alba. Dedicated to the third Duke of Alba, Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, this hall exhibits portraits by Titian that capture the essence of one of the most influential figures in Spanish history.
- Historical Library. Considered one of the most valuable in Spain, it houses original manuscripts, first editions, and historical documents, including letters from Christopher Columbus and the will of Ferdinand the Catholic.
- Great Hall. This space stands out for its elegant decor and for housing a collection of portraits of the successive Dukes of Alba, painted by masters such as Goya, Sorolla, and Madrazo.
- Empress Room.
This room houses portraits of Empress Eugenie de Montijo and other European royal figures, reflecting the international connections of the House of Alba. - Music Room. Designed for musical and social events, this room houses historic instruments and decor that evokes the elegance of bygone eras.
Each of these rooms impresses not only with its architecture and decoration, but also with the stories and cultural legacy they represent. Visiting the Liria Palace means immersing yourself in centuries of history, art, and tradition of one of Spain’s most iconic families.
