About the Thyssen Museum

The Thyssen Museum, with art that is different but complementary to the Prado and Reina Sofia, will surprise you. This museum receives one million visitors a year.

The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza is a public institution located in the Villahermosa Palace. It houses one of the most important painting collections in the world with almost 900 works of art gathered over seven decades by the Thyssen-Bornemisza family. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum fills the gaps in time and style left by the Prado and the Reina Sofía, with works by, for example, Renoir, Cézanne, Gauguin and Kandinsky. It has works from the Italian and German Renaissance, from the Netherlands (15th and 16th centuries), with works by masters of the Baroque, Rococo, Realism, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. It also has American painting from before the 19th century, Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Surrealism, Futurism, etc.

The collection contains a wide variety of artistic movements; it attracts/captivates all audiences, whether they are art lovers or not.
From the 13th to the 20th century, 8 centuries of history, a very pleasant walk through the history of Western art!
The linear layout of the tour; it is an ideal format for short itineraries (60 min), but very, very artistic.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Guided Tour of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

Everything you need to know before visiting the Thyssen with a private guide from Tour Time.

The collection and what sets it apart

  • The guided tour of the Thyssen covers the most eclectic collection of the three major museums on the Art Walk: from Flemish Primitives and the Italian Renaissance to Impressionism, German Expressionism, Cubism and 20th-century American painting. Highlights include works by Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, Picasso, Hopper and Dalí.

  • The Prado specialises in Spanish and European painting from the 15th to the 19th century. The Reina Sofía focuses on 20th-century modern and contemporary art. The Thyssen spans a much wider time frame — from the 13th to the 20th century — and is the only one of the three with a significant collection of Impressionism, Expressionism and American art. Together, the three offer a complete overview of the history of Western art.

  • Yes. Tour Time can organise combined itineraries visiting the three Art Walk museums on separate days. It's recommended to dedicate each museum to a different visit to enjoy each collection without fatigue. The team advises on the best order and combination based on the group's available time.
